Chinese made guitars - The good, the bad and the idiot
I already put in a post on Japanese guitars and how they evolved over the year to what they are now. Same goes for Korean and Indonesian made guitars - all with their specific ticks and their own evolution.
Chinese made guitars, however, have a strange evolution... you basically have the different stages of the Japanese history at the same time.
Most Chinese woodwork is reasonable to good. A lot depends on the factory, but the mayor factories are pretty consistent in the quality they produce. Labour is cheap in China resulting in cheaper guitars. The cost of wood in China is equally much cheaper than in Europe or America.
The biggest problem with Chinese guitars lays with the electronics. Although some are starting to be of reasonable quality (most of the time imported by them from Korea). Pickups made in China are not always potted, giving them a microphonic character (litterally - if you scream in them your voice is amplified). This makes that they are bound to provide a lot of feedback once you plug them in.
Legislation in China isn't like it should be. They don't take to much notice about copyrights. Resulting in a lot of counterfit guitars of mayor brands being made. The fact that they are allowed to do it, you can't blame them to do it.
The idiots are the people that buy them. In some countries, you are allowed to buy them, but very few allow to sell them.
So buying a guitar that you know is a fake, doesn't sound like the real thing, doesn't feel like the real thing and always have visible differences, you can't sell legally... YOU REALLY MUST BE A FEW MARBLES SHORT!
